Notes on Evil

What now?

I did not go to school for this.

That’s what I keep saying.

In so many of my courses, I introduce whatever necessary topic with “I did not go to school for this.”

Today, a fellow healthcare worker was killed.

I have not watched any footage, but per this description, he was restrained and unarmed at the time.

Graduate school did not prepare me for what is now on my plate.

I did not go to school to discuss with children the aftermath of a nurse being murdered in the streets.

and yet...

here we are.

This past year especially, I have insisted that the healthcare field needs to understand ethical challenges.

We need to reckon with the reality of the world we’re in and what is being asked of us.

In a very dark way, this has meant that I have been amassing buckets of French existentialism and Catholic theory.

Monday, I’d like to provide space to come together, grieve, and think about the challenges we’re facing.

Essentially, it would be a modified version of Developing an Ethical Framework CEU, with more conversation (and moderation).

Is Monday too soon? Is this what is needed right now? I’m not sure, but jfc I need to do something.

If this is what you need, I hope you’ll join me.

Until next time,

Vered
